Employee Spotlight: Thomas Schmidt

A developer of many talents, Thomas has worked at Perigee since 2016 and has been instrumental in many of your favorite features of Seven!

Name: Thomas Schmidt
Company Role:

What do you do at Perigee?

I currently work as an iOS developer on both Seven and Cycles, but mostly Seven. On a typical day at Perigee, I would be implementing exciting new features, investigating and fixing bugs, or reviewing other people's work. More recently I started helping out the Android team, I like that I got the opportunity to work on both platforms.

What’s your story?

Creating new things has always been my passion in life, so when I discovered programming as a teenager I was fascinated that you can create anything you want with just code. Later during my computer science studies, I started learning about app development by myself and I made a couple of small apps on the side. After I completed my studies, I got some working experience with apps at a small consultancy company in the Netherlands.

After about a year I wanted to do something else, so I took a bold move and moved to Sweden. I did some freelancing for a while, but then I ended up working at Perigee because I wanted to work at a place where I feel like I could make a positive impact, and work together with colleagues who are really good at what they're doing.

Your favorite podcasts/books?

I regularly listen to the Swedish podcast Språket. It's about how the Swedish language is being used and changes over time. I think languages are interesting, so it's both fun to listen to and helps to improve my Swedish.

What do you enjoy doing when you are not working?

I enjoy being outside, so during the evening I usually take a walk along the beach and on the weekends I sometimes organize hikes in the Scanian forests. But I also enjoy being at home, doing some casual programming, trying out a new cooking recipe, or just watching something fun on Netflix.

What are you passionate about?

So I’m pretty passionate about creating new things, mostly in code. I’m also very much into random facts, especially about different countries, cultures and languages.

How do you think your colleagues would describe you?

I think they would describe me as easy to work with, having a positive mindset, and being straight to the point.

What has been your favorite project at Perigee?

Besides converting all our code to Swift 3, my favorite project at Perigee has probably been the redesign of Seven two years ago. It was a big project and there was a lot of UI work involved. I was really happy with the end result, the app got transformed into a modern iOS app.

What skill(s) have you developed while working at Perigee?

Since working here, I've become better at working in a more organized and structured way. Additionally, I learned here is that it really pays off to take the time to create a tech spec before starting implementing a feature. When you share and discuss it with colleagues they might find issues or suggest better solutions which result in faster development, fewer bugs, and a cleaner codebase.
