Stressed? 5 Ways to Unwind in 60 Seconds

Everyone experiences stress at times, but if it’s becoming part of your everyday life or keeps you from sleeping at night, it’s time to do something about it. Here are 5 ways to unwind and reduce stress immediately.

Workout

Research has shown that physical activity reduces stress, and that working out regularly can eliminate unnecessary stress all together. This is because stress and exercise have something in common; they both raise your heart rate. When your heart raises from exercising, that can actually reverse damage to the brain caused by stressful events, which makes you less likely to experience stress in the future.

Breathe

From the ancient indian yoga ways to the modern elite forces of today, they all practice breathing to handle different situations. There’s a couple of different ways to do breathing exercises. In traditional yoga breathing, you inhale and exhale with your nose to lower your heart rate and in return also your stress level. In “box” breathing, you inhale for four seconds, hold your breath for four seconds, exhale for four seconds, and repeat. This is used in stressful environments for the American Navy Seals. Find a quiet space and practice your way of breathing for a few minutes to unwind.

Yoga

Yoga is an activity where you combine a special way of breathing and movements or positions to find balance in life and health. Practice one or a couple of exercises each day to help relax and reduce stress.

Massage

Massage is a way to remove tension in our muscles, which a lot of times can be caused by stress. Studies have also shown that massage reduces our levels of cortisol – a hormone associated with stress.

Stress management

Identfiy the things that stress you out, and have a strategy for stressful situations.

Try the ideas above, and make sure to schedule the activities in your calendar to make them a priority.
